Fascia is a thin membrane consisting of collagen and elastin fibers bound together into a range of bodily tissues that weave through, surround and separate muscles, bones and organs. Together, these tissues form a web-like, tensional matrix that envelops our entire body from head to toe. Think of it as a fibrous case over our entire muscular system. As we appreciate this more deeply, we can understand how the experience of being wrapped in the hammock can support the ability to sense, train and treat facia.
Our fascial fabric can be considered as a single biomechanical regulatory system as fascia restrictions can impede proper cellular metabolism, respiration, nutrition, elimination and lymphatic flow.
In Aerial Hammock Exercise we can invite our students to explore facia by providing them the opportunity to feel their fascia as they contract and expand in whole body supported and suspended hammock exercises. This can be an important body awareness experience for students to discover where their key areas of tightness or stiffness exists. We can then use the hammock with gravity assisted positions to incorporate longer periods of time in held poses that target tight areas.
