I am the most tech-averse person I know. I’ve managed to make it to my 4th decade, hardly knowing how to use a computer and have never owned a TV. Over the last month, I seriously considered getting counselling for tech-induced anxiety as I came to terms with the fact that if I wanted to continue my work with people… I had to become friends with machines.
So, you can imagine my surprise when I discovered I have fallen in love with the benefits of this new era of live-streaming! I have discovered I can give attentive personal guidance to people in the privacy of their own homes and assist isolated or more vulnerable people without risk of infection. This way of specific verbal instruction is a traditional teaching method that requires the brain to relate verbal cues to interoceptive felt-sense, rather following external representations of a posture. The results are amazing! Students report that preparing equipment and dedicated space at home to practice via streaming has encouraged more independent and regular self-care routines. They also report enjoying the reduced associated cost and time of travel and traffic!
Using an interactive virtual or online learning platform will require preparing your own materials, equipment and space at home to work with. However, this is a wonderful way to have a dedicated place for your personal self-care work and will enhance your ability to independently continue a therapeutic practice more regularly.
